Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Coral Pink Sand Dunes is a state park located between Mt. Carmel Junction and Kanab, in southwestern Utah. This is an amazing, scenic area with a great geological history. There are mountains and hills of sand, which shift with the wind as much as 50 feet per year. The park is popular with ATV riders, but there are also areas for viewing the dunes, playing in the sand with sand sleds and sand boards, photography and camping.

The dunes are formed from the erosion of Navajo Sandstone that is found throughout southwestern Utah. They are estimated to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old! The winds deposit the sand in the area, and provides a wonderful, natural playground. Some fun facts: the park is over 3,000 acres of sand, this is the only major sand dune on the Colorado Plateau, and this is the only place you will find the Coral Pink tiger beetle.

The red, orange and pink hues provide a great contrast with the green juniper and blue skies in the area. There is lots of room for everyone, and you may find yourself feeling like you are alone in this vast sea of sand. But please be aware of your surroundings, as another machine could pop up over the dune.

The park is open year-round during daylight hours. The best times to go are spring and fall, summer is still fun, but it can get extremely hot! You can come and play for the day, you can stay in the campground which has hookups, or there is primitive camping in nearby BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land.

You can bring your own ATV, rent one through Coral Pink Tours or Kanab Tour Company. You can also rent sand boards and sand sleds at the visitor’s center. My son had a great time boarding down the dunes again and again. No matter what you choose to do, you will find hours of fun on the dunes.
